What if the Image is Blurry?
This page walks through common causes and solutions for blurry images in the OV20i system. Includes both manual lens focus and the software-based focus slider.
Common Causes of Blurry Images
Cause | Description |
---|---|
Out of Focus | Lens not tuned for distance, or digital focus not calibrated |
Long Exposure + Motion | Part moves during capture, creating motion blur |
Low Light + High Gain | Gain boosts image but reduces clarity |
Dirty Lens | Smudges or debris on the camera lens |
Improper Mounting | Wrong distance for selected lens focal length |
Fixing Blurry Images
1. Use the Focus Slider in Software
- Go to Image Settings in the OV20i HMI
- Locate the Focus Slider
- Adjust slider while viewing live preview
- Find the sharpest image and save settings
note
This is recommended for most operators and avoids physical refocusing. Only available on supported lens models.
2. Manual Lens Focus (if needed)
- Loosen the lock ring on the lens
- Rotate the lens to achieve a sharp image
- Use live preview to guide adjustments
- Re-tighten the lock ring
- Use proper spacing
3. Shorten Exposure to Reduce Blur
- Go to Image Settings
- Reduce exposure time (e.g., from 10 ms → 3 ms)
- Useful for moving parts
warning
You may need brighter lighting to compensate.
4. Add or Increase Lighting
- Use OV20i's onboard strobe or external lighting
- Confirm even illumination across the ROI
5. Adjust Gain Sensibly
- Too much gain adds noise and reduces clarity
- Try reducing gain and adding light instead
6. Clean the Lens Cover
- Use a microfiber cloth or lens cleaning wipe
- Avoid alcohol or abrasive solutions
Still Not Sharp?
- Use the Test Image button for static validation
- Compare images to your recipe's training data
- Retrain if appearance has changed significantly
